|Outside the Djoser (Zoser) Complex
The order that is so characterized inside the complex stops once outside the wall. The several
hundred yards that separates the Djoser (Zoser) complex and the Pyramid of Unas is
scattered with tombs. Many of the tombs in this area are shaft tombs. A shaft tomb is a hole
that is very large and very deep in the rock with the burial chamber at the bottom of the hole.
After the burial, the chamber was filled and covered. The reason for these types of tombs was
to try to prevent grave robbers from plundering all that was inside. This also made some of the
tombs very hard to find. A few of them have never been found.
